It
was with great pride today that SmartScreen were present at the
re-Christening of the World's first ocean going passenger ship,
SS Great Britain, in Bristol. Brunel's ship was a masterpiece of
engineering and a technological marvel of the age.

July
19th has always been a special day for the SS Great Britain.
It was the day she was launched in 1843, it was also the date she
returned to the United Kingdom in 1970, and in 2005 it was the day
she was re-Christened by Sir Robin Knox Johnson after a long period
of restoration.
To
celebrate the culmination of many years work, a new museum has also
opened, dedicated to the history of the ship. SmartScreen
are proud to announce we were the development team behind the new
historic ship simulation at the museum.
This brand new interactive exhibit allows visitors to take the helm
of the SS Great Britain
and set a course for New York. Commissioned
by Centre Screen Productions - Manchester, the project brought together
Studio Liddell and SmartScreen Digital Media to create the graphics
and software for the simulation, as pictured below.

A
small steam ship comes into view off the starboard bow...
"That's
the Great Western, we may have a race on our hands!"
exclaims
the Captain as he barks his commands to visitors taking the helm
at the new museum attraction, featuring steering Brunel's SS Great
Britain.
Visitors
steer the simulation using a replica of the wooden ship's wheel
from 1843 and watch the computer generated simulation of their voyage
on a large 2.5 metre projection screen.

Follow in the
footsteps of the SS Great Britain's helmsmen and
steer the course to New York.
The attraction
is now open to the general public along with many other new interesting
and exciting exhibits, it is highly recommended if you are visiting
the Bristol area, just to get a 'feel' for what travelling to New
York or Australia was like in the Victorian period on a ship which
set new standards in engineering, reliability, and speed.
April
2005
SmartScreen are currently
putting the finishing touches to the historic ship simulator, which
should be installed at it's home in Bristol during May 2005.
We have entered a very busy period indeed, with work currently being
developed for four separate visitor centres and museums. Our developmental
educational aspirations are having to take a medium term-long term
development pattern now, but they remain a key area of our focus.
